The history of The Popped Popcorn is as interesting and diverse as the many flavors of popcorn we sell today in our store.
Originally opened in the early 1970's, SB Popcorn was established to raise money for funding a children's rehabilitation center that is known today as the Kistler Treatment Center for Children. The SB in the Company's name actually stood for Spina Bifida in recognition of the disease that their granddaughter, Michelle, was born with in 1974.
Although Wayne and Betty Kistler originally started the Center in response to their son Gregory's special needs after suffering a brain injury following a car accident and Michelle's Spina Bifida, since it's opening, The Center has helped over 3000 children in Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma.
Currently more than 500 children receive outpatient services through The Kistler Treatment Center for Children located in Ft. Smith, AR. Amazingly, treatment at The Center is provided regardless of the family’s ability to pay, and can include speech, occupational, and physical therapies. The range of diagnosis’ goes from severe to mild and the frequency of visits depends upon each child's needs and requirements.

Current owners of The Popped Popcorn Company, Mike and Pam Powell, are very familiar and proud of the history that their business is founded on and fully intend to both honor and work toward continuing the practice of donating to the Kistler Foundation.
Mike and Pam bought The Popped Popcorn Company in 2008. They are enthusiastic about the variety of flavors found in the archives left behind by previous owners, but are also challenged by the idea of creating new flavors and colors to add to their growing list of offerings.
With his background in architecture, Mike has spent hours remodeling and paying homage to the historic building that currently houses the Company, The J.M. Sparks Building built in 1908. Their love of the historic downtown Fort Smith area has inspired them to promote the area by offering quality products and affordable prices and focusing on superior customer satisfaction.
With an eye on the future and encouraging the marketing of their popcorn to various groups and organizations looking for fundraising opportunities or simply adding spice to a birthday or bridal parties, The Powell's look forward to meeting each and every client and hearing the stories behind what brings you back to their store again and again.
